3 ways to lower insulin resistance

Reversing diabetes is a lot easier than it seems. Even the medical community is becoming increasingly aware of the power of nutrition to heal our bodies. In normal or healthy conditions, insulin helps glucose get into our tissues (like the liver or the muscles) to use as energy. But when those tissues are overloaded with fat, insulin has a hard time delivering that glucose properly, leaving glucose “stuck” in our blood with no place to go, and that is known as insulin resistance. Dr. Cyrus Khambatta, best-selling author of “Mastering Diabetes” is one of many experts specializing in diabetes reversal and has done it for thousands of people around the world. In his book, Dr. Khambatta explains insulin resistance as “the accumulation of excess fat in tissues that are not designed to store large quantities of fat” (p. 50). Here are three things we can do today to start lowering insulin resistance naturally:

  1. Adopt a delicious whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. A diet high in nutrient-dense foods with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, or bulgur, legumes like beans, peas or lentils, starches like potatoes, squash or yams, mushrooms, herbs, spices, sprouts, and small quantities of nuts and seeds, while keeping a low fat intake (no more than 15% of total calories) has been shown to drastically decrease insulin resistance, in other words, increase insulin sensitivity, which is what we want.
  2. Eliminate all processed high fat foods; they are our enemy. One way to lose the cravings for those destructive foods is to enjoy natural delicious foods such as fruits, vegetables, starches, legumes and other natural foods. A lot of plant-based YouTube channels can help you find easy and tasty recipes. As we eat healthier foods, junk foods start tasting unhealthy and our taste buds naturally avoid them. Examples of destructive foods that contribute to diabetes are: french fries, fried foods, animal products, dairy (butter, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, etc.), pastries, desserts, and oils to name a few.
  3. Get moving, even a little! If you are having a hard time exercising on a daily basis, don’t get discouraged, but instead take baby steps. Even 5 minutes of movement are better than 5 minutes on the couch and as you start a feeling a little better each day, you’ll naturally want to do more. Remember that fat in tissues such as muscles or the liver contributes to glucose getting trapped in the blood.

If you would like advice on how to transition to a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle, we will be more than happy to chat with you. We understand how difficult it is to meet nutritional requirements from food alone because of soil depletion, pesticides, etc. Our line of supplements provides superfood extracts that are all natural and rich in nutrients. Reversing or controlling diabetes is possible and a lot easier than you might think!
