Gestational diabetes
Can it come back?
The answer to the question of whether gestational diabetes can come back depends largely on what you’re eating. The way we eat can be a predictor of whether or not we have insulin resistance. In other words, a poor diet is often the reason for disease. If we change those habits, the body can start healing. The way we eat is directly connected to insulin resistance, which is the beginning of diabetes, and other serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease and even cancer. The good news is that insulin resistance is reversible.
What is gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, characterized by high blood glucose. It commonly appears during late pregnancy, although it can occur at any stage. According to the CDC, 2%-10% of women in the United States develop gestational diabetes, even if they were not diabetic prior to pregnancy. This condition typically disappears after giving birth.
Why should gestational diabetes be addressed during pregnancy?
Even though this condition often disappears after giving birth, it can still cause problems such as premature birth, high blood pressure, stillbirth or type 2 diabetes later on.
How can this condition be reversed?
Insulin is one of the hormones that the pancreas produces. This hormone’s job is to deliver glucose to tissues, mainly the muscles and the liver. The muscles use this glucose for energy and the liver uses it or stores it. If there is too much fat in the tissues, insulin is not able to properly deliver this glucose, so it gets trapped in the blood. A diet high in saturated and trans fats found in animal products (including dairy), extracted oils and processed foods (including chocolate, which is extremely high in saturated fat) is directly connected to insulin resistance. By contrast, a diet high in fruits, vegetables (both starchy and non-starchy), whole grains, and legumes helps reduce insulin resistance. Fats should only come from whole plants (like avocados, olives, coconuts, nuts and seeds) never from extracted oils. The target is to limit total fat intake to no more than 15% of our daily nutrition.
